Mika: Love, Love Me

Earlier this year, Mika broke into the US with his song Grace Kelly from his new album Life in Cartoon Motion.

The album is quirky and very original. Each song is very different from the last. He seems to get compared to Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters a lot, and although I don’t like comparing very original people, they both are very unique, both have original sounding voices, and both excel at showmanship. Mika likes to be the circus ringmaster and he can pull it off.

Mika has had a fairly interesting time so far being born in Beirut, moved to Paris and then finally, London where he still lives. His full name is Michael (Mica) Holbrook Penniman. Other interesting bits are that he can’t read music. He taught himself piano by ear and composes all his own songs. He’s incredible as a pianist and composer alone. As far as pure talent goes, I’ve not seen this since Prince. He, too composed, wrote the lyrics for his own songs,  sang and performed with style. 

Mika has also written the in-flight music for British Airways and an Orbit chewing gum jingle. He’s only 23 and I think we’ll be seeing him around for a long time. Plus, he’s half American, so be extra nice to him! For pure, impressive talent, you’ve got to Love, Love Mika.
